Quick Facts:    

  • The MU SIGMA PHI SORORITY, INC. is the first duly recognized medical sorority in the University of the Philippines, the country, and Asia.
  • August 27, 1934 - the birth of the Mu Sigma Phi Sorority
  • The Sorority was initially conceived as a means by which sisses helped each other through the rigors of life in med school and provided an avenue by which they could come together and engage in various activities.
  • 1950s - sponsored dance parties and cultural events, such as performances by the Filipiniana Dance Troupe.
  • 1960s - formation of the MU DRUG BANK, the birth of the Mu Week celebrations,  and the creation of the Mu Madchen, the Sorority's official organ.
  • 1970s - sponsored cultural presentations at the CCP, service activities such as Adopt a Ward and Adopt a Community, gift-giving parties during the Christmas season, and the Tree-Lighting Ceremony. Quiz shows, student fairs, raffles, bingo socials, and movie premieres were also hosted by the Sorority.
  • 1980s - the FOUR PILLARS of the Sorority, namely, Sisterhood, Scholarship, Service, and Leadership, were concretized. Derived from the original purposes behind the conception of the Sorority, these pillars served to guide and shape its activities.
  • 1990s - birth of the MU SERVICE MONTH further solidified the Sorority's commitment to service for the underserved and unserved. The month-long activities include: blood-letting sessions, medical and surgical missions, circumcision missions, outreach programs, and exhibits.
  • 2000s - birth of the SCHOLARSHIP WEEK and CANCER INSTITUTE PARTY during the Service Month. New projects such as TUTOK GAMUTAN (a modified DOTS program), MU CARAVAN, GREAT EXPECTATIONS and BAYER-NIHAN have been added to its long list of socially-relevant and much-needed service activities.

  • Hall of Fame of Most Outstanding Student Organizations in UP Manila (1997)
  • Presidential Award for Most Active NGO in Luzon in the Service of the Urban Poor (1998)
  • Most Outstanding NGO Partner (1999)
  • Senate Committee on Health Award for Community-Oriented Medical Education (2002)
  • Gawad ng Dekano Award for Outstanding Student Organization (2000-2003)
  • Finalist, Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (2005)
